The Greens (WA) have labelled Mark McGowan’s recent announcement of a cash splash for the LNG industry as regressive and damaging.

At a LNG industry event in Shanghai the Premier announced that $10 million of government money would be splashed on a LNG plant, contradicting the need for WA to rapidly reduce its emissions.

Greens MPs slammed McGowan for being in the pocket of the oil and gas industry.

Comments attributed to Robin Chapple MLC, Greens spokesperson for Environment:

“Our planet is cooking, people are striking for climate action, we have 11 years left to make changes before the onset of disastrous climate change, and yet McGowan is deliberately ignoring advice in favour of giving public funds to the LNG industry.

“This Government has its head in the sand and is wilfully participating in advancing climate change by aiding and abetting the oil and gas industry.

“They won’t act to reduce emissions because that would stop the corporate donations from flowing into Labor party coffers. In this day and age, with all the science pointing towards dramatic climate change, we need leaders who will act to protect our climate, not hasten its destruction.

Comments attributed to Tim Clifford MLC, Greens spokesperson from Climate Change:

“This is yet another example of the McGowan Government placing profit over planet.

“It’s taken two years for the government to even begin thinking about creating a climate change policy, yet they happily throw a cool $10 million at an industry which will only increase greenhouse gas pollution.

“WA’s greenhouse gas emissions are rising, and will continue to do so unless WA Labor show leadership and actively transition our state away from big fossil fuel polluters and towards clean, reliable renewable energy.”
