The Greens WA spokesperson for Housing Tim Clifford MLC echos calls to boost investments in affordable housing, and urges the State Government to commit to further funding ahead of next week’s state budget.
The latest Anglicare Australia Rental Affordability Snapshot found there is a huge shortage of secure, affordable rentals across the country.
“The latest Anglicare report paints more than just a bleak picture for people on low incomes — this is a crisis,” Mr Clifford said.
“It is beyond comprehension that households in Australia are faced with the decision of paying rent, or buying food.
“Housing is a basic human right, and everyone should have access to safe, secure, and affordable housing.
“Ahead of the State Budget next week, I implore the McGowan Government to ensure there is adequate funding for affordable housing for the more than 750, 000 Western Australian renters.
“To make social housing work we need more houses built for people who need them. The Greens have a fully costed policy that includes the establishment of a Federal Housing Trust to fund the building of 500,000 public and community homes.
“We need urgent intervention and urgent reforms of the housing system.”
