The Greens (WA) spokesperson for climate change Tim Clifford has slammed the WA Labor Government for its wilful complicity in allowing big emitters to pollute with next-to-no regulations.

The Guardian Australia, with analysis from the Conservation Council of Western Australia, released last night damning evidence against Western Australia’s Liquefied Natural Gas industry and the State Government’s blind support for its major donors.

“The science continues to stack higher and higher about the impact fossil fuels are having on our planet and livelihoods, yet this State Government willingly looks the other way.

“We continually hear talk about how seriously this government takes climate change yet their actions just don’t add up.

“This State Labor Government continues to push through LNG approvals, throw taxpayer dollars at these projects, and undermines any attempts by the environmental protection authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from this industry. How much longer can this profit over people and planet continue?

“We already knew that WA’s LNG industry is a major contributor to Australia’s rising emissions, but now we are finding out that the entire lifecycle emissions from the proposed Burrup Hub will be far bigger than the Adani Carmichael mine.

“If the McGowan Government is serious about combating climate change, as it claims, then it must impose hard targets that require all polluters to have net zero emissions by 2050. This is the absolute bare minimum. Only then can any policy put forward by the government to combat climate change can be taken seriously.”
