WA Labor have made an absolute mockery of the independence of the Environmental Protection Authority says Greens WA spokesperson for climate change Tim Clifford MLC.
“The EPA was designed as an independent body to advise on the best way to protect the environment and reduce pollution,” Mr Clifford said.
“Rather than heed the recommendations made last week to protect our future and cut carbon emissions, the State Government has actively attacked and dismissed the environmental watchdog. This is an absolute disgrace.
“Now, Premier Mark McGowan has announced the EPA will rescind the guidelines in favour of consulting with the industry.
“How can any responsible government think this is an appropriate response? To ask the country’s biggest emitters how they would like to deal with emissions is like asking the banks what the terms of reference for the banking royal commission should be.
“Mr McGowan clearly does not understand the emergency we are in and would rather placate the big donors of the major parties than take tangible action on climate change.
“This petro-politics is harmful, not just to the environment but to our future.”
